Questions to Ask When Shopping for Health Insurance Plan

Here are a few questions to ask or research when shopping around for your personal health insurance plan:

  • Is this plan a PPO or HMO?
  • What is the co-payment?
  • What percentage is paid in-network (out-of-network)?
  • Does the company offer dental/life/prescription/maternity?
  • What benefits are parts of the extras (dental/life/prescription/maternity)?
  • What would better suite me, a Flex Spending Account or Health Savings Account?
  • Do you have any dependents who require specialized care which needs to be considered?
  • How does the company deal with disputes over medical claims?
  • What is the deductible?
  • What is the rate that you will pay each month?
  • How does the referral process work if you need to see a specialist?
  • Are there are additional fees associated with seeing an out-of-network specialist?
  • Is there a medical pre-screen before being accepted to the plan?
  • Do you have any pre-existing conditions, which may make getting certain insurance difficult to get?

These questions are, by no means, all-inclusive, but they will give you a great start when researching for your own personal health insurance plan.
